"Oh god.. oh.. oh God!" NDA exclaims in horror as he observes the fate of the Fuso-class.

"Verlaine is still in there! We have to get her out before the control room gets torn to shreds!" the engineer then adds as he turns to look at the control room.

"Verlaine! Verlaine?!"

Rose's heart sank as more explosions ravaged Fusou.

"Ah..."

There's no way she could've survived all that, right? We've already lost our flagship, Atago's heavily damaged, and they've still got another Kongo. How can we possibly win? We can't run, either, not when we're this deep.

... Is this it?

-------

"Verlaine is still in there! We have to get her out before the control room gets torn to shreds!"

-------

!

Glancing over to the control room, it does seem relatively intact. There's still a chance...!

"Foster! They're probably going to target Atago or Takao next. We'll cover for you, take over Akizuki and save Verlaine!"

... Akizuki? Right, the smokes!

"Akizuki, Mutsuki, smoke generators now!"

"Takao, destroyers, sink the damaged Furutaka! Atago, Tenryu, Tatsuta, target the next nearest Furutaka! After firing, the fleet is to head west! Except for Atago, you're to head southwest instead to minimize profile."

"Once the smoke sets in, we'll need the planes to provide visual. Takao, what's their visual range?"

"Have squadron 1 continue heading towards the west cluster. I will assign targets soon. Squadron 2, proceed as planned."

___________
-- Day 02, 1803hours --

Foster: "Foster here - hard copy, will get it done."

Travis: "You got it! Shells, up!"

Akizuki and Mutsuki sweep across the front of the fleet, warming up their smoke generators in preparation to mask the fleet's movements.

Takao initiates second salvo, scoring a single hit against the already damaged Furutaka from 10 miles. The american destroyers follow up with surprisingly accurate gunfire, scoring a total of seven hits with their 5 inch guns, easily sinking the Furutaka.

Atago, Tenryu and Tatsuta engage with their hard-hitting 203mm guns, and the Mutsuki-class destroyers engage the second Furutaka with all of their main guns. The onslaught of 203mm and 120mm shells nets four hits - three with 203mm shells and one with a single 120mm shell from a very lucky Satsuki. This severely damages the Furutaka, and it barely stays afloat.

As the entire fleet disappears into the smoke, the hostile ships turn their attention to the incoming air strike. At a range of only 3 miles, the first air squadron receives 4 effective hits, downing two planes while damaging another. The second air squadron receives 5 effective hits, downing two planes and also damaging another.

Akizuki finally arrives at the scene of the doomed Fuso, and to everyone's relief, Verlaine clambers out of the lopsided command room and dives into the water, swimming towards the Akizuki who is stopped right beside the wrecked ship. On the deck of Akizuki, Foster gives Verlaine his hand, and she is hoisted back up into safety. Akizuki immediately accelerates to avoid damage from any further secondary explosions as Fuso finally capsizes completely onto her port side.

Verlaine: "...sorry. Let's get them good.

Reassuming command of the skies - we have them within striking range for the planes within the next minute. How should we spread the air attacks, admiral?"

Takao confirms that the planes have a primitive but functional visual sensor suite, capable of detecting surface vessels at up to 5 miles in ideal conditions. However, unlike scout planes, they completely lack vision capabilities at night and will only be useful if targets are detected for them prior to their attack in those conditions.

"... No, it's completely my fault. I'm glad you're still with us."

"W-Well, we'll likely have to dock for repairs after this, so no need to conserve the planes' payloads."

"Squadron 2, all 9 torpedoes on the Kongo, and all 5 bombs. Squadron 1, target the east cluster instead. When in range, drop 2 bombs, 3 torpedoes on the nearest west cluster Furutaka, likewise for the second nearest, and drop everything else on the last."

"Fleet, head east, back into the smoke. Angle southwards until you can broadside the west cluster. Travis, Francis, have your ships finish off the damaged Furu. Takao, and the rest of the destroyers, target the other Furu. Atago, Tatsuta, Tenryu, hold fire and finish off any ships that survive, prioritizing the closest ones first."

___________
-- Day 02, 1804hours --

Spoiler: Show More

Travis: "Roger that!"

Verlaine: "Squadron 2, lining up for attack!"

The remaining planes from the 2nd aerial squadron swoop in for their attacks - the 5 bombers strike with her high explosive 800KG bombs, landing two hits amongst the five bombs (62%). The first 3 torpedo bombers line up their attacks, launching one torpedo each at the Kongo (92%), and two of them hit their marks, sinking the Kongo with combined firepower.

The remaining six torpedo bombers spread their attacks amongst the remaining Furutaka heavy cruisers (71%), and all six of them land their torpedoes successfully, sinking two of the three remaining Furutaka heavy cruisers in the eastern cluster, leaving only one alive in the group.

The american destroyers engage the damaged Furutaka, but the first shot from the leading Benham-class destroyer knocks it out of the fight at 9 miles.

Guns are turned onto the last remaining Furutaka in the western cluster, which first faces the broadside of Takao who lands three solid hits. The destroyers engage the target with her smaller guns at 9 miles, but only Somers scores a single hit amongst the six destroyers engaging. Atago turns her guns to engage the same target, scoring two 203mm shell hits, which is sufficient to finish the Furutaka off.

With only one Furutaka in the eastern cluster remaining, Tenryu and Tatsuta focus their guns on her, but score no hits.

The final Furutaka knocks another bomber out of the sky from the 1st bomber squadron, bringing them down to 13 planes strong.

Verlaine: "Squadron 1 will be on top of the last Furutaka by the next minute, admiral.

The smoke you deployed will dissipate in a couple of minutes."

Four bombers swoop over the Furutaka, dropping their heavy payloads in sequence (62%), and 3 of 4 of them land their bombs, sinking the Furutaka. The planes all form up into formation and begin making their way back towards the fleet.

Verlaine: "All contacts down... things appear clean. Smoke dissipates in another minute.

What's next for us?"

Aratama takes a few minutes to scavenge every wreck before they sink, garnering a total of 6000 KG of nanomaterials - which includes the amount scavenged from the capsized but not fully submerged Fuso.

Radar detects several patrols, totaling 6 Yubari-class light cruisers, 3 Furutaka-class heavy cruisers and 6 Hatsuharu-class destroyers split into 3 smaller battle groups in combinations of 2-1-2 per ship, spread across the northern side of the island.

The fleet egresses the area via the easternmost, direct path, in hopes of avoiding any further battle.

This maneuver succeeds in it's intention, allowing the remaining ships to return to Okinawa without further incident. As everyone returns, they dock and moor themselves quickly.

The journey has taken over an hour, and the sun has dropped closer to the horizon by a noticeable extent.

Verlaine: "The sun's setting... sky's darkening. This could be good or bad for us, depending how you see it.

No airbase here, and unlike seaplanes they won't be able to land on water... we'll have to hold the bombers in a holding pattern until we're done here, even if they have to do so throughout the night. I'll handle them from my Akizuki, if need be."
