PB2/PB3 talk for other OSes (I rise from the grave!)

Postby Hunter4408 » 12 February 2022, 23:23

Hey everybody. I've had Plazma Burst at the back of my mind for a while, and since I don't use Discord I'm going to boomerpost in the forum. Some of you might remember me, some of you might not. I'm best known for the Space Pirates I and II series and maybe also my Hunger Games map. I'm glad to see names I remember. :)

I took such a hiatus because mapmaking is what drove me in the later years, and with the completion of the Space Pirates series in 2018 I felt like PB3's engine would grant much more possibility for the lore I was trying to create. So I waited, and waited, and waited.. Lol, and here I am. No rush though, Eric is why we are all here and it's a work of art what he has made. Seeing all the amazing stuff that others have created has made me want to go back and improve upon my brainchild but unfortunately I have moved from Linux to FreeBSD.

Quite frankly better alternatives to Flash such as Ruffle are not to the point where Plazma Burst 2 can be emulated so it's impossible to play on FreeBSD as far as I know. I might find some way to make PB2 playable here one day, but wishful thinking hopes that PB3 can at least be ran through FreeBSD's Linux compatibility layer.

Thoughts? Has anyone else tried to play Plazma Burst games on platforms that aren't Windows, Mac or Linux?

It might be as easy as taking suitable Flash Player from webarchive page for Adobe Flash Players and wrapping it in some sort of launcher.

I do have Windows launcher source code on my github, though no FreeBSD version. Linux, OS X, Windows XP/7/10 seem to work.

Hi Eric,
I meant to update this thread that the Windows launcher works on FreeBSD using WINE (a Windows-Unix compatibility layer). I'm able to play this way. FreeBSD also has a compatibility layer for Linux and I use this to play Steam games, but the Linux PB2 launcher would segfault on launch. I usually find WINE to be more reliable than this.

If PB2.5 has similar situation and an open-source launcher I would be happy to try and port it to the Ports Collection.
