Stealing maps?

Postby phsc » 16 September 2018, 15:33

well, take a look

the first one is the ultra popular paul308-base, a base map which isnt original, but still is kinda unique with its features, its a bad map tho, but really popular for kids

the second one is kubakuba-base_1
its pretty obvious its a copy, it has a few additional features, buts just like a copy, if you dont believe me play it
and then I ask
is this ethical? moral? should staff let this happen? map steaing has been a thing forever, mostly with open source maps, xnx-school is prob the biggest example of this

personally i think these maps should be deleted and the user should be banned for like, 1 copy = 1 week, 2 copies = 1 month, 3 copies = 6 months, 4 copies = 1 year, 5 copies = perma

like exact copies, not taking a map and changing its purpose, ex: a zombie defense in paul308 base would be original, but just another base map using all of its features... thats a copy
and copying features is a common thing that isnt going away and shouldnt cuz it evolved the average quality of maps

so whats ur opinion on this?

EDIT: just look, kubakubas map is taking on the original, think of this as someone making an exact copy of max teabag-gunshop back in 2011 and making it more popular

This is why the original mapmaker needs to be credited on every copy if the copy was made from the original map's source. Plus you'd need to specifically define copying aside from the obvious examples of copying. Having a map that's a copy but also has additional features isn't really a copy exactly in that it's a 1:1 recreation

Do you really think they have the time and capacity to go after every copied map and the people that made the copies? Going after map copies has never been a serious priority at all and it won't realistically be in the future

Site reports are highly unreliable and completely pointless to use as well

First, it's the map owner's fault if the map was open sourced and someone copied it.

Second, there are currently no rules about copying other map designs.
I think it would be hard for a staff to determine if a map was really copied since the map editor tools is limited, some mapmakers can duplicate pre-existed designs without knowing it.

yeah, but in paul308-base case... he didnt! and now the copy is being played more than the original

and the second point is true, but then, its exactly the same thing, same shapes, same stuff at the same area, with a few extra modded guns

I think as long as credit is given and the map was open sourced / in public domain it is fine.
I like edits if they do something to improve or change the map. 1:1 copying is pretty pointless.

Sword Gem's map clearly says in the description that his map is a copy.
I dont see the problem here.
Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules
Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these.
But of all the world's brave heroes, there's none that can compare.

It's the original owner's fault for releasing the source to public, he could think of bad scenarios before doing that.
An eye for an eye only makes two people blind.

Too bad that there are people who actually recreate the whole map without it being open sourced

What?
They don't look similar at all.
The pictures are in direct contradiction with your post.
The only similar thing in these two pictures is that both maps have a base on the left side, also have water and trees.

That's because phsc took the image links directly from the map preview, so when the map gets updated the preview changes as well. They used to look more similar back then
