".... You sure it won't malfunction?"

"How much to install everything, and how much per rocket?"

"Regarding the missile, it's 200 nano-kilograms a piece! If you want more explosive power but a more expensive cost, I can increase the warhead size, but if you want to make budget cuts its explosive power and warhead will have to be reduced." the russian responds to the admiral's question as he looks over the specifications again.

"For the launcher, I'd estimate around 1350 nano-kilograms. If it turns out to be a failure, we can always disassemble it back into nanomaterials and scrap the project completely. Regarding testing, I recommend we test as coastal installation first, then attempt to mount it on a ship's catapult slot.. Is it called a slot?" NDA then says as he internally cringes at the cost of the launcher.

"Alright. We can test one on the island."

"How are we going to power it though? And what's the MW consumption of this thing?"

"Takao, try building the launcher on the island. Anywhere suitable is fine. Can electricity be routed to it from a ship? Wires, or something."

Takao: "We can't use our own generators to power coastal installations, but I'll reroute power from the backup generators on land - which typically power facilities such as the cranes - to power the test installation.

I'll get Aratama to set it up over there, just by the coast. It'll take a couple of minutes."

The launcher is quickly materialized and installed beside the Okinawa port, just by an empty plot of land. It takes a moment until the launcher is powered up, and begins to turn slightly on it's turret laterally, while testing elevation of the launcher tube.

Takao: "It takes standard hydraulics, requires a compact nanomaterializer for reloading - which is more power intensive than standard autoloaders - and a FCS-radar integration system... It's consuming roughly 5 MW worth of energy from the ground-based generator right now."

NDA smiles as he sees the launcher being materialized.

"It's ready for testing, I suppose. Should we begin the trials, Admiral?" the engineer says enthusiastic again.

"Here we go then."

"Testing propulsion and ordnance first. I want a single, live missile to be assembled and fired into the ocean approximately at 15 nautical miles. We can decide about guidance after this."

The launcher materializes a large missle and fires it into the distance, exploding on contact with water approximately 15 miles out, causing a massive pillar of water to erupt from the surface.

Verlaine: "Looks like it works to me."

"Wow.. it actually works."

"I was concerned it wouldn't work properly because I worked with smaller missile launchers back then.. but it's a relief it works safely. I have no idea what kind of moving target we can make to test guidance that's not one of our own ships.. so we'll just mount it on Atago and test it on the nearest Furutaka. Please disassemble the launcher back into nanomaterials and re-assemble it on Atago's left catapult slot, unless anyone has any objections."

A missile launcher is mounted on Atago, while the one on the coastline is dematerialized.

In the time that has passed, Atago receives her well-deserved repairs, while Takao herself undergoes a refit, replacing all of her main turrets with improved dual 203mm gun mounts.

Takao: "Thank you very much - I'll sink more of 'em with these weapons.

The new launcher is on my sister now - port side, it'll do you good to remember that."

Verlaine: "What's next, then? Finish wiping out the southern archipelago? It would give us a lot more operational freedom around the region south of Okinawa - that must be the main production area, from the heavy concentrations of hostile patrols near that area."

"Aye, Takao."

"Yes, let's clear out that area. First, we head for the westmost airbase. We'll construct more squadrons there, and repair and restock our current squadrons, the previous battle showed how effective the aircraft were."

The fleet returns to the archipelago, settling down at the westernmost airbase. Unlike the southern airbase, there appears to be no ships here. By this time, night has fallen.

Verlaine: "It's quiet... almost too quiet.

Hang on... wasn't this the airbase you bombarded? Those craters are still in the runway. Sure, it's more than long enough to handle these twin-engine planes but it's useless if there's holes in the ground..."

Verlaine: "Copy, and, no problem."

The fleet reapproaches the southern airbase once more. Sensors pick up nothing as the fleet approaches the island - it seems quiet, once again.

Verlaine: "Sensors are functioning well at full capacity this evening, admiral. No hostile ships in the vicinity of the island - it's clear.

I'll begin working on rearming the planes, but it'll take a while to get all the planes ready, especially with only one runway at this airbase."

Verlaine: "Affirmative! I already like the sound of this.

It'll take us just under half an hour to get everything done - it's dark, but sensors are working fine. Do you want to delegate picket patrols amongst the fleet to defend the vicinity, just in case something stumbles across us while the planes are getting ready?"

Some flights begin lining up for sequential landing sequences, getting their wheels on the ground, while the hangars on the airbase begin glowing very subtly as numerous planes are materialized and begin taxiing out onto a very busy taxiway, in preparation for take-off.

___________
-- Day 02, 2152 hours --

It takes her a few minutes, but she draws up a preliminary plan.

Verlaine: "Copy. I would suggest a division of two light fleets, each lead by one of your light cruisers - they would be escorted by a single Benham-class, Somers-class and either Mutsuki or Akizuki, making two light fleets of 4 ships each, composed of 1 light cruiser and 3 destroyers in 2 groups. They would patrol approximately 5 miles north of the docks with a 5 mile separation between the 2 groups - one slightly northwest, one slightly northeast.

The main fleet of Atago, Takao, Satsuki and Nagatsuki would remain near the northern coastline of the island, and will be engaged if contacts come up on the sensors of either of the lighter fleets. Mutsuki and Akizuki, each equipped with smoke generators, can augment the tactical capabilities of the picket fleets to allow them to disengage if required - giving time for the main fleet to re-engage with superior firepower if need be.

What say you?"
