Question to PB2 players regarding this forum

Postby Buzzard 1 » 12 November 2015, 05:17

As much as I think this post fits better in the General Discussion section, I would like to ask a question to the players who often go to this forum.

Since I am well aware that people enjoy this forum better than the newer one, I agree on that. However, I would like to ask why do you guys like this so forum a lot? Was there things that the old forum done better than the newer one or in reverse? What does this forum have that the newer forum does not?

In my opinion, the old forum is better than the new forum because of the nostalgia and PB2 styled theme, although I believed the newer forums had better and a little more features than this one. Like profile space and signature space, especially it had a better post text editor.

Nostalgia makes a lot of players completely blind to facts, that's why the current forums have tons of positive feedback.

For me it is the simplicity it has, that's all.

Aside from the memories held in this place, this was also the only forum that was on-site and didn't require separate registration, which saved a lot of time since I doubt anyone likes going through the process of making a forum account for the sake of simply using it. The forum may lack quite a bit of plugins, such as reputation, etc, but now that I look back to it, most were incredibly useless to begin with; we can live on without them.

I honestly like this forum because of the convenience of simply being logged onto the site to use the forum that the place possesses - site accounts connected to the forum in simpler terms. Not to mention the following forums weren't necessarily needed, and were ultimately going to be a waste of money anyways, which could've been invested in something better in my opinion. It sounded like a good decision back then to switch but I think the overall community opinion can refute that. There were some stuff in the new forums I liked that I wish this forum had - like the little notification section on the upper right and the ability to mention people in posts, but as long as I can use the forums - good or bad, really - I'm personally fine with it.

I like this forum mainly because of one thing: There is no reputation system.

Sure, you might argue that reputation doesn't matter and all. The thing is, though, is it's still there. People will still judge others based on it even if there are no rankings and all. Not to mention that there are people who got a high reputation simply because their friends voted so - even if they don't deserve it.

There are also those fancy plug-ins and widgets that don't seem to make any noticeable difference. Feel free to correct me on any discrepancies and misconceptions.

I'd prefer the 2011-2013 forums, where people were much nicer to everyone else regardless of opinions, rep and mood.

Aren't all forums easily accessible to anyone viewing them?

What was so complicated in the other forum?

Ridiculous. With the @mention (or whatever it should be called) and quote notifications gone, tracking such stuff has became difficult. Instead of just @mentioning someone, I have to send a "please look at this topic" PM to get his attention? It's just... meh...
Plus, have you ever noticed that the "Forum Profile" button links to UCP instead of the actual profile? That doesn't make navigation any easier, too.

Koffee wrote:People will still judge others based on it [reputation] even if there are no rankings and all.
People will always find a way to judge someone depending on some dumb, abstract, or/and completely unrelated stuff, ranged from reputation points (previous forums had pretty much no defense against reputation farming - I have seen someone got 15 rep from 1 user in a single day) to the length of nickname, or account ID. Post counter is a good example, and there's a number of members who pretty much farm it. (I better not point fingers right now, though)
In other words, removing reputation system wouldn't help very much in this aspect.

I wonder what part of the word opinion you may not understand.
All the trash that other forums had was just useless, the reputation system as main example.
Yeah, all that of the @ quote was fine, but is it so hard to simply navigate through the forum?
Once again, it's my opinion, there was no need to ask that.

I have never noticed any much of a difference of navigating through the newer forums, it just seemed to be pretty much the same to me.

I don't see much of a purpose of the reputation system, it seems something that the feature relates to the like system of Facebook or the +1 system of Youtube/Google+. And I did like the @ mentions, but if people get annoyed by being constantly mentioned, wasn't there an option to stop receiving notifications from an active thread you made a post on?

This forum is easy to access on almost any device. Phone for example, same layout, buttons are nice and neat.

With the new forums, the mobile version was messed up.
